Kerrera opens its doors to welcome you to special days on this unique island. Come and explore the island, the arts and crafts and taste the wonderful food.
The event is aimed at local people and visitors. It will be a celebration of what makes Kerrera unique and how the geology, history, flora all create an enviroment that contributes to the production of outstanding quality food.
A weekend of activities will take place on the island on 27th & 28th August 2011 with a focal point for activities by the pier offering a selection of activities available over the two days including:
- Sale of Kerrera brand of produce featuring Kerrera oysters, beef, lamb, pork, baked good, arts and crafts.
- A barbeque, teas, lunch based on Kerrera produce.
- Launch of a little book about Kerrera's history, geology, wildlife, flora and fauna community etc.
- Guided walks featuring history, geology, flora and fauna
~ most walks start at mid-day.
- An exhibition of the projects under development by IKDT and the unique challenges of living on Kerrera.
Despite Kerrera's close proximity to the bustling sea town of Oban, Kerrera is a different world. The handful of houses you will see as you walk around the Islands southern route remain largely unaffected in over a century, providing a window into the past which is sadly being lost in many other remote and rural areas.
Kerrera is ultimate escapism in all weathers, and is a wonderful day out for the family. Cars are banned on the Island expect the inhabitants own vehicles, as a result you can enjoy a peaceful walk to Gylen castle to the South or to Hutchesons Monument at the very North of the Island, or a hike around the circular 6 mile route cutting across to the other side of the Island to enjoy views of Mull and Lismore
